Metaphor Minute: Bikinis, Jeans & Tea

The METAPHOR MINUTE Newsletter by Anne Miller

December 16, 2014

Bikinis, Jeans & Tea

If there was ever such an award (and maybe I should begin one), the “Metaphorian-of-the-Year” trophy might well go to Nina Kaufman, the New York based business lawyer who has been helping thousands of entrepreneurs save time, money and aggravation with business law issues for over fifteen years.

Let’s face it. Unless you are a lawyer, legal issues (and lawyers?) can be seen as dull, dreary, and draining. However, Nina has figured out how to blend her legal advice with equally lively and compelling communications so that we not only want to do business with her, but also enjoy being with her!

From Nina’s Metaphor Trove…

  1. Selling her Contracts & Collections Info Kit
Want to learn about contracts and collections? I didn’t think so. But would you like to know more from Nina when you hear. “Why a 1 page contract is like a bikini in Wisconsin winter?

  2. Writing on her blog
Are you up for changing your website? Unlikely, since it took so much time just to get the darn thing up in the first place. Nina knows that, but she still wants you to see where it may not be serving you. Rather than stating her goal upfront and risking instant pushback, she eases you into the idea of change this way:

When I bought my favorite jeans years ago, they fit like a glove. Just what I needed. As I put on weight, they generously stretched with me. When I lost weight, though, they stayed stretched in the knees and the butt. Not flattering. Holes developed around the seams. The cuffs became tattered. They turned into my “indoor” jeans—I was too embarrassed to be seen on the streets of NYC wearing them (Although, in my town, who would notice?) I loved them, but there came a time when I needed to stop patching and get a new pair.

Our websites are like that, too.
Then, Nina launches into her recommendations and argument. And because of the jeans metaphor story upfront, we are now ready to listen to her with an open mind.
  3. Making a point on video.
Do you sometimes feel you are running around like a chicken with its head cut off, that you are incredibly active, but not very productive? We all know that we should slow down and work smarter but, really, how often do we do that. In her “How Empty is Your Cup?” video on her blog, using herself and the story metaphor of the Zen master and the professor, Nina’s message is clear, and presented in a way that we, as listeners, can accept it without feeling patronized.

There’s No Excuse for Being Dull, Demanding, or Pedantic

Selling, blogging, advising, Nina clearly has the metaphor habit, which makes her very easy to read or listen to. Where can you put a little more “Nina” into your world?

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone!
